Elizabethan magus, mathematician, and royal advisor John Dee first published the Monas Hieroglyphica at Antwerp in 1564 — a dense and enigmatic treatise expounding his monadic glyph across 24 theorems drawing on mathematics, magic, Kabbalah, and anagogy. It remains one of the foundational texts behind the art and meaning of geometric marks, seals, and sigils in Western occult science.
This Ouroboros Press edition offers a genuinely new and complete translation from the original Latin by Dr. Teresa Burns and Dr. Nancy Turner, incorporating all scholarship available since C.H. Josten’s 1964 translation, together with extensive scholarly footnotes by Dr. Burns illuminating many of Dee’s most enigmatic passages — and crucially including the prefatory letters to Emperor Maximilian and to the printer Silvius, often omitted from other editions. New ink illustrations by Michelle Anderst faithfully reproduce the diagrams of the 1564 original, with typesetting by Joseph Uccello following Dee’s own exacting instructions to his first printer.
