The book takes its name from the lost “black book” of a well-known Cambridgeshire witch, as well as from plots of land once sacrificed to the spirits and to the Old One himself. Pearson — a Suffolk-born practising Traditional Witch of over thirty-five years — moves through this ancient, long-isolated landscape of impassable fen and marsh, gathering its land wights, meremaids, giants and spectral hounds alongside the characters of Craft, wort-cunning, toad lore and folk magic that have been nurtured in what has rightly been named “Witch Country.” Chapters cover the living landscape, the region’s saints and folk-Christian survivals, and close with an appendix on removing a witch’s curse.
