ALMA THÉON (1843–1908), born Mary Chrystine Woodroffe Ware, was an occultist and wife and co-worker of Max Théon. Originally she worked and wrote under the pseudonym the Sibyl Alta Una but later declined to have her name attached to her writings, preferring instead to use the Cosmic Pentacle (a six cornered star with a lotus in the centre), the Seal of the Secretary of the Cosmic Instruction—a seal which was used communally with her husband.(1935).
MAX THÉON (1848–1927), born Louis-Maximilian Bimstein in Poland, was a Jewish occultist and a key early figure in the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor. In 1885, he married Mary Chrystine Woodroffe Ware (Alma Théon), whose channeled insights into cosmic and human destiny became central to their work. The couple settled near Tlemcen, Algeria, in 1887, where they founded the Cosmic Movement. Guided by Alma’s revelations, the movement’s Paris-based disciples published the influential journal the Revue Cosmique, with most writings signed by Max Théon, or Aia Aziz (his pseudonym), in keeping with Alma’s wish for anonymity.
“THE QUEEN OF THE ISLES,” though originally written in English, was translated into French and serialized from June to November 1905 in the Revue Cosmique. Peter Davidson, the cofounder of the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor and one of the Theon’s chief disciples, issued a translation back into English in 1907 which, though in the main accurate, was not without its faults. The current translation is a revision of his translation, correcting numerous errors and remedying other imperfections.
