Frederick Hockley (1809–1885) was a significant, if often overlooked, figure in nineteenth-century occultism — an active seer and scryer with deep interests in ritual magic, alchemy and spiritualism. A Freemason who later joined the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia and other esoteric fraternities, his work was drawn on posthumously by members of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Hockley is equally remembered for seeking out and meticulously copying grimoires and magical, alchemical and Kabbalistic manuscripts that had lain hidden in private English collections, alongside compiling magical texts of his own and keeping detailed records of his scrying sessions. In this manuscript, Hockley sets out the philosophy and method of crystallomancy — crystal-gazing or scrying through crystal or mirror — a practice with a celebrated pedigree stretching back to John Dee and his seer Edward Kelley in the Elizabethan era.
